PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Urban Latin Enrichment Initiative is a music production and song building workshop for youth in diverse cultural communities. In this program we infuse Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Samba, Afro Beat rhythms with electronic music and write original lyrics with a positive, socially conscience message that provokes unity amongst peers from various backgrounds.

Enriquecimiento Iniciativa Urbana Latina es una producción de música y canción de juventud taller de creación en las diversas comunidades culturales. En este programa promovemos Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Samba, ritmos Afro-Beat con la música electrónica y escribir letras originales con un positivo mensaje conciencia social, que provoca unidad entre compañeros de otras procedencias.

What topics will we cover?

Introduce to music production and songwriting
Learn about percussion, instruments and sounds used in contemporary and popular Latin and African music
Write lyrics from the perspective of a young person's opinion and views
Language translation between english and spanish speaking youth
Song making and music production techniques; live versus electronic
Address economic and social issues in their culture and communities

By the end of this class students should be able to

Distinguish between contemporary and modern popular Latin music styles
Understand different harmonic and rhythmic approaches
Create original music on production software
Compose song concepts and lyrics
Feel comfortable addressing issues
Understand the historic connection of african and latin music
Positively express themselves amongst peers, family and friends
Play at least one percussion instrument in a group and live performance

What level is the course and do they need any particular skills?

The course is designed for beginner to intermediate creative youth at Grade 4 or higher with decent sight reading skills at a similar level. Ideally they should have some level of interest in the arts and musical genres.

¿Qué nivel es el curso y no necesitan conocimientos específicos?

El curso está diseñado para principiantes e intermedios en torno a los jóvenes creativos Grado 4 o superior con vista decente habilidades de lectura de nivel similar. Idealmente, deberían tener algún nivel de interés por las artes y géneros musicales.

How will they be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

They will be taught by our professional music producers and song writing staff alongside an interpreter lead instructor assistant. Outside of class they will be instructed to do small research projects that will require them to do a verbal presentation in front of the class.

Que será impartido por nuestros profesionales y productores de música escribir canciones junto a un intérprete personal instructor asistente. Fuera de la clase que se le pedirá hacer pequeños proyectos de investigación que se requieren para hacer una exposición oral en la parte delantera de la clase.

What will students receive at the end of class?

Each student will receive copies of professionally manufactured CD’s that can be sold to friends, teachers, staff and family members at the final showcase presentation.

Introduction Statement:

We are proud to announce the U.L.E.I. addition to our programs here at Kariz Kids Youth Enrichment Services. The concept of this program derived from a escalating issue that we observed in some of the schools of diverse ethnicities. The newly enrolled hispanic students were isolating themselves from the groups during workshops. Because the majority of the students were of the Hip Hop and urban backgrounds, the hispanic demographic of the class began feeling out of the loop creatively. We needed to find a way to engage them. There are cultural barriers that at times cause misunderstandings within the students' social circles. We have witnessed this issue lead to bullying, altercations and sometimes forcing the victims of these circumstances to be more introverted in academic and social environments. U.L.E.I. bridges these social gaps and allows youth to participate equally not only in the classroom but in society. The Hispanic/Latino population is the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority in the nation. Today there is still a disproportionately large percentage of Hispanic/Latino youth living in poverty. In comparison to the African/American youth, the numbers are astonishingly similar. These disadvantaged environments exacerbates stress, health risk and unhealthy behaviors. It is U.L.E.I.'s objective to encourage and inspire youth of these communities by giving them a platform to discuss their most passionate concerns in the form of song and music production.

We specialize in the implementation of high quality music enrichment programs and curricula. Our staff of instructors are all currently working and professionally established recording artists, music producers and musicians. From the stage to the classroom these rock star teachers are passionate about their community and focused on positive change in our youth. At the end of the programs, students walk away with their own CD and a jumpstart into a career of their dreams.
